Beer #23 Costa Rica, better late than never!

So with the Euro 2016 in full swing, we’ve had the enquiries come in as to whether we are doing the beers of Europe, the short answer is no! It’s a great idea and it’ll will be attempted at some stage. The truth is we want to finish our 2014 challenge first, which brings us on to our Costa Rican Imperial!

Kindly donated by our fellow beer enthusiast Will some two years ago now, we forgot about this beauty long after Germany thrashed Brazil, but it waited patiently at the back of the fridge for its time to shine, which is, er, now!

A lovely brew that brings with it memories of the World Cup, here’s hoping we can finish the challenge before Russia 2018! Also, what is it about a brown bottle that makes a beer tastier!?

Costa Rica – false alarm!!

We were in New Orleans a few weeks ago. Ever diligent, we noticed a Costa Rican beer on the menu of the wonderful Bayou Beer Garden , called Bohemia.

Of course we immediately ordered two, chink’d bottles together to toast our good luck and another beer off the list!! We then read the small print on the label….this Bohemia was a Mexican beer (which we managed way earlier in the summer).

There is a Costa Rican beer called Bohemia, this just wasn’t it. This beer was actually pretty tangy and watery, it was quickly dispatched before moving on to more of the better beers that the bar and N’awlins had to offer.

Announcing new stretch goal

collection

So we managed 22 out of the 32 beers from the competing nations in this summers world cup. We were confident going into the last week, but alas the list of phone numbers and shops to visit we had, didn’t bare fruit. We have made a lot of new friends, drank some new beers and enjoyed the football – so the challenge counts as a moral success. We’ve also been over the moon about how many people, from around the world, have visited the blog.

We’ve decided to track down the elusive beers and post them here whenever we are lucky enough to get our hands on ’em. We’ve got a trip planned to the Americas which, watch this space, will tick a few more beers off our list.

The challenge continues….

Beer #22 Club Colombia

club2

Found this intense flavoured beer in Elephant and Castle, South London which has a big Colombian community. I was lucky enough to find an Ecuadorian restaurant on my investigations, but sadly they didn’t have any Ecuadorian beer in stock.

club

We were told by a well travelled colleague of ours that ‘Club’ is seen as bit of a posh beer in Colombia!

Beer #20 No Stone unturned

stone larger

Found this Ghanaian treasure in the heart of Harlsden, Nort West London. The shop in question is called Kotoko and has a variety of Ghanaian and Nigerian beers on offer, as real treasure trove, however no sign of a Ivorian or Cameroonian beer. The quest goes on!

The front label was crumpled, very happy to have this tasty beer ticked off our list!

Beer #17 from Russia with love

baltika

What a gem of a beer – flavoursome and crisp. There are several other Baltika beers, all with different numbers e.g. Baltika 7. This one will suffice for now. We picked this beer up from a Russian food called Kalinka, between Bayswater and Queensway tube stations. Their impressive selection of Russian beers was only beaten by their array of Vodkas.

Football every evening – don’t want it to end!!

Beer #16 Greek Mythos

Greek Mythos bottle

The Greeks invented this. Extra points for having a Unicorn on the label. Bagged this beauty from a lovely Greek Grocery on Moscow Road, W2  called Athenian. Lot’s of people have commented (not below) that this was the beer of their holiday in such and such a year, guess it all adds to the Mythos……..I’ll get my coat!

This is just to prove that I drank this today. And by the way, that’s half way through the challenge people!
